About OneGoal

Despite decades of work and millions of  dollars invested, the degree divide continues to be one of our nation’s most complex and critical injustices, with deep roots in systems of oppression and racism.  Only 22% of students from low-income communities earn a college degree, compared to 67% of their peers from high-income areas. 

COVID-19 further exposed and exacerbated inequity, with communities of color and those in low-income areas impacted at disproportionately high rates. We are looking for individuals to join us in our fight for equity during this extremely critical time.

  • OneGoal has grown from a small afterschool program serving just 32 students in Chicago to a nationwide movement that is serving some 12,500 students in six communities.
  • Our model, honed over 14 years, has three core differentiators: A rigorous, culturally relevant content and experience, cohorts of students who can support each other over the course of three years, and a teacher who supports our most vulnerable students’ long-term ambitions.
  • 88% of OneGoal high school graduates enroll in a postsecondary institution and 79% of those who enroll persist one year after high school.

OneGoal is launching our 2025 Strategic Plan focused on improving our impact, scale, and sustainability. Our VP, Finance will play an integral role in ensuring we are able to balance these three as we take on new and exciting opportunities to solve this problem at scale. By 2025, OneGoal Fellows will be on track to graduate at two times  the rate of students from similar backgrounds. We will have successfully diversified our product offerings to increase equitable postsecondary advising across entire systems. And we will be ready to achieve impact at scale, responding to the massive injustice of the degree divide with a bold solution of equal force.

The Person

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer and working closely with the executive leadership of OneGoal, the VP, Finance will manage a growing team of 6 staff and oversee OneGoal’s $23M  annual operating budget, holding responsibility for all financial affairs of the organization, including financial planning, budgeting and analysis, accounting, financial controls and reporting, risk management, and insurance.

The VP will evolve OneGoal’s financial model and capabilities to capture new opportunities at scale and drive sustainable growth of impact. They  will continuously assess and evaluate the financial performance of the organization with regards to long-term strategic goals, budgets and forecasts, and will create annual financial objectives that align with OneGoal’s 2025 Strategic Plan. The VP will take the lead on forecasting the fiscal impact of future organizational objectives at the strategic and tactical levels.

As the top financial leader, the VP will employ a partnership-driven, collaborative mindset, working with both internal and external partners with a clear vision and enthusiasm for providing equitable postsecondary opportunities to students. They will proactively create an environment for successful organizational performance and accept responsibility for the financial viability of OneGoal.

You will do this by:

Developing and managing OneGoal’s finance strategy

  • Develop and oversee a long-term financial plan and strategy that aligns with our 2025 Strategic Plan (including expense cost structure, revenue strategy, ongoing product pricing strategy and analysis, and reserve and investment policy)
  • Establish a financial vision, planning, and forecasting processes to support our 2025 Strategic Plan
  • On a quarterly basis, report financials, forecasts, and metrics to our executive leadership; on a monthly basis, in partnership with your team, report department-level financials, forecasts, and metrics to department budget owners
  • Generate insights from financial data to support timely organizational decisions
  • Oversee and optimize short- and long-term budget planning and cost efficiency  in alignment with the strategic plan
  • Partner with revenue-generating departments to optimize financial operating models
  • Oversee cash and investment management 
  • Proactively identify challenges, research alternatives, and propose solutions for fiscal issues or trends

Evolving OneGoal’s finance infrastructure as needed to support our strategy

  • Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, decision support processes, and procedures  to effectively deliver on organizational goals and grant reporting requirements, specifically around state and federal grants
  • Develop and implement decision support tools and finance reporting that assists cross-functional business leaders in making sound financial decisions and future planse the rela
  • Lead the annual audit and preparation and filing of all required tax forms, state, and grant reporting
  • Oversee and monitor OneGoal’s  insurance policies, space planning, and real estate leases 

Serving as an organizational leader and thought-partner

  • Establish a strong partnership model for how Finance will work in partnership with teams, including setting regular touch points and monthly and quarterly reviews of financial data and projections
  • Collaborate with and advise the CEO on key financial metrics and decisions and align around finance-related priorities and other key decisions including new business opportunities
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to guide the way financial goals are reflected in organizational KPIs
  • Partner with the COO and CEO to lead the Finance Committees of the Board of Directors
  • Serve as a thought partner to programming leadership as they expand their model, advising on strategic growth opportunities and cost-efficient opportunities for impact
  • Manage key external banking, investment, and audit relationships

For this role, the hiring salary range (i.e. the range a candidate could be offered to start) is $150,000-$175,000.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Lived experience of the Fellows we serve (Preferred)
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Required), MBA (Preferred)
  • Deep understanding of and significant experience with  financial operations and functions in a non-profit environment including across multiple functions (e.g. financial planning analysis, long-term financial model creation and stewardship, grant accounting) (Required)
  • Capable leader who engages, motivates, challenges, develops and holds others accountable. (Required)
  • Ability to independently balance organization-wide competing priorities, end user needs, and the complexity of a dynamic, matrix environment (Required)
  • Experience with public funding, specifically reporting on state or federal grants (Required)
