Executive Leadership Opportunities – City of Detroit
The City of Detroit is seeking three senior leaders to drive a coordinated, citywide strategy across housing, planning, workforce, and economic development. These roles will work in close partnership to advance equitable growth, neighborhood revitalization, and long-term economic sustainability aligned with the Mayor’s vision.
Chief of Housing, Planning, Workforce and Economic Development - This executive serves as the City’s chief economic development leader, overseeing a comprehensive strategy that integrates housing, land use, planning, and workforce initiatives. Partnering with key stakeholders. Responsibilities include overseeing major departments and agencies, aligning priorities, advancing housing affordability, driving job creation, managing public-private partnerships, and ensuring data-driven performance, compliance, and equitable outcomes across all initiatives.
Director of Planning and Development - This role leads the City’s planning vision, guiding land use, zoning, and development strategy. The Director oversees the Master Plan, design review, and community engagement processes while coordinating with boards, commissions, and stakeholders. Responsibilities include managing departmental operations, advancing equitable development, overseeing land sales, and ensuring alignment with the City’s growth, design, and quality-of-life goals.
Senior Director of Housing and Planning - Oversees housing and planning operations, working closely with the Detroit Housing Commission and Detroit Land Bank Authority. The role leads housing production, preservation, and neighborhood revitalization strategies, while improving land use, zoning, and permitting processes. Responsibilities include driving cross-department collaboration, managing public assets, advancing financing strategies, and ensuring equitable, transparent, and results-driven outcomes for Detroit residents.
Chief of Housing, Planning, Workforce and Economic Development - Requires a Master’s degree in urban planning, public administration, economics, business, or a related field (JD/MBA accepted) and 12+ years of progressive experience, including 5+ years in senior leadership. Expertise in housing, land use, economic development, and public financing is essential. Equivalent combinations of education, certifications (e.g., AICP, CEcD, CPM), and extensive leadership experience will be considered.
Director of Planning and Development - Requires a Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban design, architecture, or a related field and 10+ years of planning experience, including 5+ years in management. Experience with zoning, land use, budgeting, and public engagement is required. Advanced degrees and large-scale redevelopment experience are preferred.
Senior Director of Housing and Planning - Requires a Master’s degree (or JD/MBA) and 10+ years of relevant experience, including 5+ years in leadership. Strong background in housing, planning, and cross-functional program management is required. Equivalent experience and professional certifications are accepted.
